Five Propositions to the Problem „How can Memorial Sites better be integrated in their surroundings?“

What is your opinion to the following theories by Klaus Volland? Please send us an e-mail .
Who is more involved with this topic knows, how difficult our work can be sometimes. It’s our opinion, that the realisation of the propositions below, published by Klaus Volland on a conference at Leck and Ladelund ( September 13th –15th, 2002), can be really helpful.

Thesis 1:
The amount and interactions of actual interests having today effect on the historical site have to be recognized and determined. This calls for direct (maybe even difficult) talks between memorial site personnel and persons, whose interests are touched by the institution.

Thesis 2:
The memorial site has to communicate with multiple partners on local and regional levels (communities, schools and alike, associations, youth groups, banks etc.) and attract them by interesting offers.

Thesis 3:
An active information work is essential. This means, among others, regular opening times resp. contacts, extensive press work, a well-maintenanced, attractive Homepage as well as own research publishings resp. support of researchers, incl. pupils.

Thesis 4:
The memorial site needs a regular schedule of events during a year, but also additional offers like special exhibitions, musical events, school exchanges etc. to attract the interest of the populace.

Thesis 5:
To rise the interest of the local inhabitants, meetings with original witnesses can be arranged, which not only means former prisoners, but includes also German partisipants of the historical events.
